What is Crossfit…

CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning programme, designed to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible.  CrossFit is not a specialised fitness programme but a deliberate attempt to optimise physical competence in each of the ten recognised fitness domains which are: Cardiovascular and Respiratory endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Co-ordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy.

CrossFit combines movements such as sprinting, rowing, jumping rope, climbing rope, flipping tyres, weightlifting, carrying heavy objects and many bodyweight exercises.  Equipment used includes barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, kettlebells, medicine balls and boxes for box jumps.  These elements are mixed in numerous combinations to form prescribed “Workouts of the Day” or “WODs”.  Typically classes at affiliated gyms (boxes) include a warm-up, a skill development segment, the high-intensity WOD and a period of individual or group stretching.

The CrossFit programme is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience, age or level of fitness.

“The Aim of CrossFit is to physically prepare people for whatever life might throw at them”.

CrossFit is primarily a fitness programme developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades.  He was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains).  CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimises fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity).  CrossFit is also the community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together.  In fact, the communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component of why it’s so effective.

Greg Glassman co-founded CrossFit with his wife Lauren Glassman in 2000.  CrossFit exercise programme is practiced by members of approximately 6,100 affiliated gyms and is also the programme of choice for many fire departments, law enforcement agencies and military organisations.  Along with this, CrossFit has been adopted by elementary school, high school and college sports teams throughout America.
